How Much Does Home Care Cost in Houston?
Short answer: Non-medical home care in the Houston area commonly runs around $30 an hour. A few hours a day, a few days a week, is the most common place families start. Insurance and benefits can lower what you pay out of pocket.
What does home care cost per week?
Here is what common schedules add up to at $30 an hour. These are examples to help you plan, not a quote.
- 4 hours a day, 3 days a week: 12 hours, about $360 a week.
- 4 hours a day, 5 days a week: 20 hours, about $600 a week.
- 8 hours a day, 5 days a week: 40 hours, about $1,200 a week.
Round-the-clock care costs more and is usually planned differently. Call us and we will talk through what makes sense for your loved one.
What affects the price?
- Hours and schedule. More hours, nights, and weekends all change the total.
- Level of help. Companionship and meals are different from hands-on help with bathing and transfers.
- Specialized needs. Care for dementia or a serious illness may need a caregiver with specific experience.
Is home care worth the cost?
For many families, yes. A few hours of help a day can prevent the things that cost far more: a fall, a hospital stay, or a rushed move to a facility. It also keeps the family caregiver from burning out, which is often what forces a crisis.
Waiting until something goes wrong usually means making a bigger, more expensive decision in a hurry. Starting small, early, is often the cheaper path.
What can help pay for home care?
- VA benefits. Aid and Attendance and other programs can help eligible veterans and surviving spouses pay for care at home.
- Long-term care insurance. Many policies cover care at home. We help you check what your policy pays before care starts.
- Medicare GUIDE program. People living with dementia who have traditional Medicare Part A and Part B may get up to about 70 hours of in-home care a year.
- Care packages. Set packages of 4 hours of care a day, available through Groupon.
Regular Medicare does not pay for ongoing non-medical care. Here is what Medicare does and doesn’t cover.
