Understanding VA Benefits for Surviving Spouses
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers benefits to surviving spouses, dependents, and family members of Veterans who have passed away or were seriously injured in the line of duty.
One of the most common programs is the Survivors Pension, a tax-free monetary benefit for eligible low-income, un-remarried surviving spouses and unmarried children of deceased wartime Veterans.
Other VA spouse benefits may include:
Disability compensation
Pension benefits
Education and training assistance
Employment services
VA-guaranteed home loans
Health care benefits
Life insurance
Memorial benefits
These benefits are designed to provide stability, opportunity, and financial relief during a difficult time.
Do I Qualify for VA Benefits for Spouses?
Eligibility for the Survivors Pension generally requires:

- The Veteran was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
- The surviving spouse has not remarried (in most cases)
- Income and net worth meet VA limits
For Surviving Children:
- Under age 18, OR
- Under age 23 and attending a VA-approved school, OR
- Permanently incapable of self-support due to disability before age 18
