Learn About VA Pension Benefits
Veterans and surviving spouses may be eligible for VA pension benefits to help offset the cost of in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home services. These benefits are designed to provide support for those who served and their families.
Understanding VA Pension Benefits
VA pensions are additional benefits that may be available on top of a Veteran’s service record. While we don’t process applications or check eligibility, we provide information to help you understand the resources available and how they can support your care needs.
What Are the Qualifications for a Veterans Pension?
To qualify for Veterans pension benefits, a Veteran must meet service and income requirements:
- At least 90 days of active duty service, including one day during a wartime period
- If entering active duty after September 7, 1980: at least 24 months of active duty (or the full period your orders required), including one wartime day (with some exceptions)
In addition to service, the Veteran must also be one of the following:
- Age 65 or older
- Totally and permanently disabled
- A patient in a nursing home receiving skilled care
- Receiving Social Security Disability Insurance
- Receiving Supplemental Security Income
How Much Can I Receive from a Veterans Pension?
Pension amounts depend on your income, net worth, and eligibility. While figures may change over time, here are example annual maximums (based on latest VA guidance):
- Veteran: up to $21,961
- Married Veteran: up to $26,035
- Surviving Spouse: up to $14,112
These amounts are contingent on meeting income and net worth requirements.
